CRAFTY MATHEMATICS: Workshop on Mathematics and Knitting, Crochet and Paper Folding

Date:

Saturday, 20 May 2017 -
10:00am to 1:00pm

Venue:

Red Centre (centre wing), RC-3082. UNSW (map ref H:13)

Together with Julia Collins (from AMSI) the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW Sydney is holding a free workshop on craft and mathematics. Everyone is welcome, but places are limited so registration is required.

Experience mathematics coming alive in your hands through the power of craft! Crochet a piece of coral or knit a chanterelle mushroom to reveal the intricacies of hyperbolic geometry. Fold paper to create origami exploring the different Platonic solids - highly symmetric 3D shapes revered by the ancient Greeks.

Needles, hooks, yarn and paper will be provided and helpers will be on hand to explain the maths and teach the basics.

The workshop will be held on Saturday 20th May, from 10am-1pm in the School of Mathematics and Statistics UNSW SYDNEY.

Location

This workshop will be held in Room 3082 of the Red Centre Building at UNSW's Kensington campus. Room 3082 is on level 3 of the Centre Wing of the building.
