"Do The Maths" is a project run by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW. The aim of the project is to attract more students to major in mathematics at UNSW, and also to encourage current undergraduate students to consider the possibility of postgraduate study in mathematics.

The seed funding for this project was provided by the Equity and Diversity Unit of UNSW, with a view to attracting female students to study mathematics at UNSW.

We felt that many high school students who enjoy mathematics are unaware of the many career opportunities to which studying mathematics at university can lead. There is a lot of pressure for Year 12 students to choose a "vocational" degree, like Commerce or Engineering. However, at UNSW, there are ways to maximise the amount of mathematics you take in your degree, for example by taking a double degree. One aspect of the "Do The Maths" project is to inform high school students, their mathematics teachers and careers advisors about these possibilities.

Past events include four one-day "Girls Do The Maths" workshops for high school girls in Year 12. You can read more about them here. Additionally, a Teachers' Afternoon was held on the 2nd December 2005; summary of the discussion is here.

Future planned events include further one-day workshops for mathematically inclined students, and more workshops for mathematics teachers and careers advisors.

Another aspect of the "Do The Maths" project is to develop a good relationship between the School of Mathematics and Statistics and its undergraduate mathematics majors. We will be extending current mentoring programs to offer assistance and guidance to mathematics majors throughout their degree.
