Talented Students Program

Many of the best mathematics students choose to study Mathematics at UNSW. We are particularly keen to enable those students to achieve their maximum potential. Our talented students program has been developed with this aim in mind.

The talented students program starts in your first year of mathematics study with special tutorials offered in our first year Higher Mathematics subjects. Alongside the fundamentals, talented students are given the opportunity to stretch themselves with mathematics from second year and beyond.

As a talented student you would also have access to special study programs that would enable you to study second and third year courses while still in first year, with support from individually assigned academic mentors. Some students have been able to finish their degrees six months early by taking advantage of these arrangements.

In later years, top students can apply for paid summer scholarships where they work with a research mathematician over the summer on a suitably chosen research project. The school also organizes participation in international mathematics competitions and summer schools.

Of course, many of these opportunities extend not only to students enrolled in a traditional Mathematics major within an Advanced Science degree, but also students studying mathematics as a combined major with Commerce, Arts, Engineering and Law.

There are also University scholarships, Faculty of Science Scholarships and School of Mathematics Scholarships available to very talented students.

"The School considers this to be one of its most important initiatives over the past five years. If you are interested and expect or hope to perform very well in your final school examinations, please contact me to discuss these opportunities. In particular, come and see me toward enrollment time early next year."
