General Information The School of Mathematics has one of the largest collections of computing facilities on campus. We have 2 Undergraduate Student Laboratories, containing a network of approximately 150 personal computers (PCs). The School's laboratories are in rooms G012 and M020 of the Red Centre. Room M020 is through the glass door (and along the corridor) opposite the Mathematics entrance to the Red Centre. Room G012 is down the stairs from the main entrance. For further details see the Computing Facilities page. Opening Times Both of the School's laboratories are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday during teaching semester, unless they are being used for other purposes (for example if they are booked for classes or being used or set up for computer based tests. The smaller mezzanine lab M020 is usually opened at 8.30am and will remain open until 9pm. At the weekend, the M020 lab is usually open from 12 noon to 6pm on the weekends except at times of low demand. See the section on Weekend Access below for further details. Outside the teaching semester, only lab M020 will be open, and only from 9am to 5pm. On public holidays and when the University is closed (e.g. over the Christmas/New Year period), all labs will be closed. Weekend Access All students doing a mathmatics course should automatically have their ID card coded for access to the Red Centre. This access should become active at the end of the second week of each semester. Students should be notified through the School's Student Web Portal when activation has been requested from UNSW security. The card will give you access only through the main entrance to the School of Mathematics in the Centre wing of the Red Centre (mezzanine level) and only between 12 noon and 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Unfortunately, we have as yet no way of guaranteeing that this will work at any given time, and that failure to gain access to the building is not a valid excuse for failing to submit assignments on time. Note that weekend access is a privilege, not a right and will be withdrawn if misused. Any student who is found in parts of the building other than the computing lab area, or in any area at other times, or who provides access to persons who are not students, will have their access cancelled. The School may also take other actions as permitted under University regulations for Academic Misconduct in these circumstances. Weekend Opening Times For the current semester, we intend to open the M020 lab at the end of weeks 2 to 12. Further updates will be posted here. |
