Obtaining Funding

Scholarships and Other Sources of Funding for Postgraduate Research Students

Australian Students

Australian Postgraduate Awards (APA) are offered through the Australian Research Council, for postgraduate research leading to the degree of Master of Science (Research) and or PhD, and are available to Australian citizens or those who have been granted permanent resident status and have lived in Australia continuously for the last twelve months as at the closing date for applications (which is 31 October.)

There are approximately one hundred full-time new awards across all faculties at UNSW each year. Allowances are indexed annually, are non-taxable. A relocation allowance and a thesis allowance are also available. More information about APA's and the application process are available from the Graduate Research School's website.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics supplements all APAs by $5,000 per year.

Other scholarships are often available, sometimes linked to particular research projects. Students who apply unsuccessfully for an APA are automatically considered for other scholarships.

It is anticipated that HECS will be waived for all research MSc and PhD students at UNSW who are Australian or New Zealand citizens, or Australian permanent residents.

MASCOS Top-up Scholarships

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems (MASCOS) offers generous top-up scholarships for PhD students in the areas of the Centre's interests. They are awarded to holders of an Australian Postgraduate Award or University Postgraduate Award, and are valued at $8000 per year (currently Tax free), with a further $3000 per year for approved travel and research support. The awards will be based on APA and UPA applications and no separate application is necessary. Holders of EIPRS or similar awards may also be considered on a case by case basis. Six awards were made in 2004.

International Students

Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (EIPRS) are awarded on academic merit and research capacity to suitably qualified graduates from any country except Australia and New Zealand. The scholarship will cover tuition fees and compulsory health insurance normally for a period of two years for a Masters research degree, and three years for a Ph.D degree. Further information and application forms may be obtained from the Australian Embassy or Consulate in your country or from the Graduate Research School's website. The closing date for applications is August 31st. The EIPRS scheme does not itself provide a living allowance, but the School of Mathematics and Statistics will provide some living allowance to all students who are awarded an EIPRS.

Students who apply unsuccessfully for an EIPRS are automatically considered for other scholarships to help cover their fees and living expenses. For students from certain developing countries, the Australian International Development Assistance Bureau provides John Crawford Scholarships. A brochure of such countries is available from Australian Embassies and Consulates. Note that in some countries applications close early in March. There are other forms of aid available to students from developing countries, such as scholarships from organisations like the World Bank. Information about these is available in the student's home country.

Students from some developed countries may be able to obtain scholarships for studying in other countries; information about these is available in the student's home country.

PhD students at UNSW holding EIPRS or similar awards will be considered for an additional Mathematics Research Award, valued at $5,000 per annum; these are awarded on a competitive basis.

Teaching

All postgraduate research students in the School may participate in the School's Teacher Preparation Program. The components of this program include English training, classroom training and training in assessment methods. On successful completion of this program, students are offered the opportunity to earn up to $7,000 per year through activities such as teaching and marking.
