Past Honours Theses

The following students are a sample of those who have completed Honours degrees in Mathematics over the last few years:

Applied Mathematics Students

  • Josephine Mazaraki (1997) studied dynamical methods for analysing and forecasting chaotic data with Bruce Henry and is now at the College of Law.

  • Chris Aiken (1997) did his project on Internal Waves and is now doing a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography with Jason Middleton at UNSW.

  • Michael Nealon (1999) did his project on semidefinite programming with Vaithilingam Jeyakumar and is now working for Operations Research Consulting. He was awarded the University Medal.

  • Ben Waterhouse (2000) did a project on Data Mining with Vaithilingam Jeyakumar, and is now doing a PhD on computational mathematics. He was awarded the University Medal.

  • Danesh Jogia (2002) did a project on integrability detection in rational maps over finite fields with John Roberts, and is now doing a PhD with John in a similar area.

  • John Ormerod (2003) with Vaithilingam Jeyakumar, investigated semidefinite programming approaches to data mining problems.

  • Ambros Gleixner, (2006) with Gary Froyland. Wrote on large-scale two-stage scheduling problems: Integer programming formulations, varioussolution techniques, and application to the open pit mineproduction scheduling problem"

  • Danny Wong, (2006) with Rob Womersley and John Evans (Actuarial Studies), Quantifying Operational Risk in the Aust. Banking Environment.

  • Douglas Chew, (2006) with Bruce Henry, Multifractal Analysis of Biomedical Datasets.

  • Gina Choutis, (2006) with Gary Froyland, Stochastic Price Modelling for Mine Optimisation.

  • Lit-Hau Tan, (2006) with Chris Tisdell, Investigations Into Dynamic Equations on Time Scales.

  • Scott Rowe, (2006) with Jason Middleton, The Canberra easterly and deeply penetrating sea-breezes.

  • Tomasia Kulik, (2006) with Peter Blennerhassett, General non-linear mathematical theory of fluid flow through a porous medium.

  • Tony Siu, (2006) with Rob Womersley, Application of Quasi Monte-Carlo Methods to Financial Price and Hedging.

  • Ognjen Stancevic, (2007) with Gary Froyland, Transfer operator methods in continuous time dynamical systems.

  • Amy Kwon, (2007) with Bruce Henry, Mathematical modelling of Amyloid beta plaque deposits in Alzheimer's Disease.

  • Michelle Dunbar (2007) with Vaithilingam Jeyakumar, wrote on Optimisation approaches to simultaneous classification and feature selection.

Pure Mathematics Students

  • Brendon Litton (1997) investigated some problems in the geometry of Banach spaces, with Ian Doust. He is now studying medicine at Sydney University.

  • Lyria Bennett (1997), who was awarded the University Medal, studied the heat equation on Lie groups, with Tony Dooley. She also completed a Law Degree at UNSW and now lectures in the Law School.

  • Nguyen Thanh Phi Long (1997) was awarded the University Medal. He investigated Huygen’s principle for wave propagation on hyperbolic space and complex symmetric spaces, with Garth Gaudry. He is currently doing a PhD at Columbia University, USA.

  • Dan Pillemer (1998) investigated triply orthogonal systems of surfaces and the Lame’ equations, with Colin Rogers. He is currently a Management Consultant.

  • Jeremy Henson (1998) studied constellations and their applications, with Norman Wildberger. At present he is a Medical Registrar at Prince of Wales Hospital.

  • Luke Collison (1999) investigated lattices associated to root systems under the supervision of Norman Wildberger.

  • Sylvia Mak (1999) wrote her thesis on stochastic integrals and solutions to the heat equation under the supervision of Tony Dooley. Sylvia went on to a Law degree at UNSW.

  • Amber Glynn (2000) did most of her Honours year on exchange in Tuebingen, Germany. Her honours thesis was on semigroups of operators. She is presently working, studying and travelling in Europe.

  • Anne Thomas's thesis (2002) was supervised by Michael Cowling. She was awarded a PhD from the University of Chicago in 2007 and has a position at MSRI Berkeley and then Cornell U.

  • Rupert McCallum's thesis (2003) `Free groups in SL(n,Q)' was written under the supervision of Michael Cowling. Rupert has continued on at UNSW as a PhD student.

  • Petrina So (2003) completed an Honours year at UNSW after finishing a mathematics degree in Auckland. Petrina's thesis was on the safety of RSA cryptography, written under the supervision of Dennis Trenerry.

  • Erika Davies (2003) studied non-standard analysis with David Tacon. She is currently completing her software engineering degree.

  • Ronny Lan (2003) did his thesis in operator theory with Ian Doust. He is now working for a software company.

  • Antony Orton (2003) worked with Daniel Chan on a project called `Algebraic geometry and the generalization of Bezout's theorem'.

  • Kevin Sun (2003) received a University Medal for his thesis which linked combinatorics and group representation theory. His thesis was supervised by Tony Dooley.

  • Maike Massierer (2006) wrote a thesis on `Provably secure cryptographic hash functions', supervised by James Franklin and Richard Buckland. She returned to Germany and is studying in Berlin.

  • Koushik Panda (2007) wrote on `Twisted Rings of Differential Operators on the Projective Line and the Beilinson-Bernstein Theorem', supervised by Daniel Chan.

  • Beren Sanders (2007) wrote on `The Busemann-Petty Problem in Convex Geometry', supervised by Ian Doust.

  • Mandy Seet (2007) wrote on `Elliptic Curve Cryptography: Improving the Pollard-Rho Algorithm', supervised by James Franklin and Peter Brown.

  • Boris Lerner (2007) wrote on `The Brauer-Manin obstruction to the Hasse principle', supervised by Daniel Chan.

Statistics Students

  • Maria Musiela (1997) did her thesis in Kolmogorov Equations with Ben Goldys. She is now working at the Credit Suisse Asset Management.

  • Pong Chun Wong (1997) did his thesis in Neural Networks with Grace Chan. He is now in Hong Kong.

  • Catherine Wong (1998) did her thesis on Poisson Approximation with A Xia. She worked with SPSS and now tutors at UNSW.

  • Stella Karuri (1998) did a project with William Dunsmuir on Spatio-temporal modelling of Sydney Wind Fields. She plans to do a PhD in statistics.

  • Atsushi Kawai (1998) did his thesis with Marek Musiela on Two-asset Option Pricing. He is currently working at Mizuho Securities.

  • Edward Cripps (1999) did a project with William Dunsmuir on Modelling the Stochastic Nature of Sydney Harbour Wind Time Series Data using ARCH/GARCH Techniques. He also completed a PhD in statistics at UNSW.

  • David Goldsbury (1999) did his thesis with Estate Khmaladze on Large numbers of Rare Events. He is now working at the Department of Transport.

  • Dmitry Gorelik (1999) did his thesis with Marek Musiela on Applications of Partial Differential Equations in Finance.

  • Jame Baseman (2000) did his thesis with Ben Goldys on Empirical Modelling of Interest Rates.

  • Stephen Yeung Lamko (2001) worked with Spiridon Penev on "Bootstrap methods with time varying volatility". He now works in the banking industry.

  • Sanja Lucjic (2003) worked with Peter Cooke on 'Analysis of Sales Data for Woolworths - Regression and Time Series Modelling Approaches'.

  • Tina Chen (2003) worked with Sally Galbraith on 'Inquisition of Missing Covariates Impact on Survival Analysis: PML Case Study'

  • Nathan Pearce (2003) wrote his thesis 'Exploring Local Dependence in Data' under the supervision of Inge Koch. He continued in this area with a PhD at UNSW under Matt Wand.

  • Nancy Guo (2004) worked with Ben Goldys on 'Statistical Analysis of Implied Volatility Surface: an Australian Perspective'.

  • Michael Roper (2004) wrote on 'Perturbation Analysis of the CEV-CIR Stochastic Volatility Model', supervised by Ben Goldys.

  • Imanuel Costigan (2005) did his thesis with Marek Rutkowski on The Valuation of Convertible Bonds with Credit Risk. He now works with Ernst & Young.

  • Arianna Cowling (2005) worked with Inge Koch on Feature Significance for Flow Cytometry Data. She now works at the Reserve Bank.

  • Smith Huang (2005) worked with Inge Koch on Dimension Reduction and Multidimensional Scaling. He worked for Allianz and is currently at Partners in Performance.

  • Danny Lo (2005) did his thesis with William Dunsmuir on Unknown Change-Point Detection in the Volatility of Financial Time Series. He was awarded the University Medal.

  • Brad Morris (2005) worked with William Dunsmuir on Application and Comparison of Models for High Frequency Price Data.

  • Honglin Jiang (2006) wrote on 'The ABC of Tuberculosis Transmission', supervised by Scott Sisson. He is now doing a PhD at the National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance of Vaccine Preventable Diseases.

  • Daniel Lin (2006) wrote on 'Estimating the spread of tuberculosis through simulation-based indirect inference', supervised by Scott Sisson.

  • Raymond Gutierrez (2007) wrote on `Conditions of arbitrage on a range of call options', supervised by Donna Salopek.

  • Cuong Viet Tran (2007) wrote on `Measuring Leverage Effect in Financial Markets', supervised by Ben Goldys

  • Anthony Armstrong (2007) wrote on `Valuation Of Credit Default Index Swaptions', supervised by Marek Rutkowski

  • Xin Lei (2007) was awarded the University Medal. He worked with Spiridon Penev on estimation and testing for Archimedean copulas.
