Past Industry Events

In March 2017, SAS hosted a seminar, "Analytics is Everywhere" for a group of 60 UNSW mathematics and statistics students.

Big Data Workshop: Science Meets Industry:  On 1 July 2014, the School hosted a one-day workshop on Big Data. Participants included industry representatives from banking, data analysis and defence, and academics spanning mathematics, computer science and economics. 

Limits to Growth: Beyond the Point of Inflexion: The School hosted a full day symposium at NIDA's Parade Theatre on 11 December 2013, plus a Q&A event at the UNSW Scientia on 12 December. Prominent keynote speakers included Graciela Chichilnisky, Peter Cosier, Ross Gittins, Clive Hamilton, Ken Henry, Graeme Maxton, Jørgen Randers and Peter Victor. The events focused on key questions: Is economic growth forever sustainable? What impact would a stagnant or declining population have on GDP? Can mathematical models guide policy makers in answering these questions? What is the strategic plan for planet Earth? 

The Human Face of Data Analytics – What you need to know for business survival and success: On 25 May 2011 a MASCOS and Industry & Investment NSW breakfast briefing took place at Sydney's MLC Centre, looking at the value that a focus on the human face and infrastructure of analytics can deliver to business. Keynote speakers were Dr Eugene Dubossarsky, Director of Presciient, and Paul Ormonde-James, advisor to Echo Entertainment Group.

Discrete Optimization Workshop on Applications in Transport, Logistics and Networks: Held 12-15 October 2010, this workshop was organised by MASCOS in conjunction with an international consortium of Mathematical Research Centres of Excellence (MITACS, CMM, and MATHEON). Sponsored by Industry & Investment NSW and the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute, it brought together academic researchers, industry researchers and industry leaders to discuss recent developments in discrete optimization, and to promote regional and international mathematical exchange and collaboration.

Forecasting & Analytics: Your tools to business success: On 27 September 2010 a MASCOS and Industry & Investment NSW breakfast briefing was held in Sydney's MLC Centre, to demonstrate how experts in analytics have applied their methods in a range of industries. Keynote speakers were Dr Eugene Dubossarsky, Director of Presciient, and Dr Ben Waterhouse, Managing Director of Model Solutions.
