A Visitors Guide to the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW

This page contains information for anyone who plans to visit the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New South Wales. Whether you are coming on sabbatical, attending a conference, wanting to have a chat about postgraduate study or just dropping in, we hope that you will find what you need here.

Location

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is located on the main Kensington campus of the University, about 8km south-east of the centre of Sydney.

There are maps of the region as well as interactive campus and locality maps accessible from the University's Homepage

The campus is bounded by Anzac Parade, High Street, Botany Street and Barker Street . Within the campus, the School of Mathematics and Statistics is spread over six levels of the the centre and eastern wings of the Red Centre Building. The School Reception desk/Office and main administrative offices are located on the third floor.

Transport to UNSW Kensington Campus

From the airport
Kingsford-Smith Airport at Mascot is Sydney's international and domestic gateway. It is served by major international cariers and all main domestic carriers. The Airport is located about 10km from campus. A taxi from the airport will cost about AU$25 - $30 and should take 15-20 minutes. There is also a direct bus service (Route 400 to Bondi Junction), which runs every 10-20 minutes on weekdays (less freqently on weekends and evenings) and costs $2.70. The bus trip takes about 30 minutes.

From Central Station
From Central Railway Station, the 891 Express bus and routes 391, 393, and 395 depart from Eddy Ave to the UNSW Kensington campus. The journey takes 10-15 minutes on the Express and 20-25 minutes on the 391, 393 and 395. The trip costs $2.70, or one dip of a brown travel 10 (which can be purchased for around $20 at any newsagency). 891 express buses are "Prepay Only" meaning drivers do not accept cash on board. Tickets and travel passes are available from various outlets.
Between 7am and 7pm buses operate at approximately 5-minute intervals. After 7pm buses operate every 20-30 minutes. A taxi from Central Railway Station takes 15-20 minutes and costs around $15.

From Circular Quay and the CBD
Bus routes 392, 394, 396, 397 and 399 all travel from Circular Quay, up Elizabeth and Oxford Streets then along Anzac Pde, stopping in front of the University's main gate. There is also an infrequent 890 service in the morning, starting at Circular Quay and running express from Taylor Square to the University (High Street). There is no pm equivalent express service

From Bondi Junction
Bus route number 400, travelling between Bondi Junction to the Airport (and beyond), passes along High Street Anzac Parade and stops at the Anzac Gate. The journey takes around 30 minutes and costs $2.70. Between 7am and 7pm these buses operate every 10-20 minutes. More information about bus services to UNSW is available at the UNSW Transport Page.

Driving
Parking is restricted on campus and subject to charges. We can usually arrange complimentary parking for visitors who are attending conferences and seminars if we are given a few days warning - contact your host/organiser. Longer-term visitors usually pay for a parking permit. The most appropriate entrance for visitors to the School of Mathematics and Statistics is Gate 14 (see map) on Barker Street.

Taxis
Taxis are plentiful throughout the CBD and eastern suburbs around the University. Taxis may either be booked online, by telephone or hailed on the street. (Premier Cabs online and phone booking systems accept University addresses whereas some other firms have trouble with an address on campus). If you have 3 or more people travelling, or if there is not a direct bus available, taxis are a convenient and economical way of travelling around the Eastern Suburbs. If you catch a taxi to the university, ask the driver to drop you either at the main gate on Anzac Pde or Gate 14 (see map) on Barker Street. It's also possible for taxis to drive up to the east Wing of the Red Centre building - look for Engineering Walk on the campus map.

Accommodation

As with most large cities, accommodation in Sydney is expensive. Prices given in the links below may not be accurate because accommodation prices fluctuate throughout the year. The options available also vary with the time of year and how far in advance you book, so we recommend that you contact your host for advice. On-campus accommodation is usually in short supply.

Short Term visits
For visits of a few days to a few weeks, a local hotel, motel or guesthouse is usually the best option. For a slightly longer stay, renting a holiday apartment near the beach is often more comfortable. UNSW has negotiated preferential rates with a number of local 4 and 5 star hotels. your host or school administrative staff should be able to assist in finding quotes.

Middle Term visits
Finding accommodation for a stay of several months can be difficult. The best option, if it can be arranged, is to stay in the home of a local staff member who is away. Another possibility is to share an apartment, if you can find a suitable roommate. Visit the Accommodation Office to see lists of places to rent and share.

Long Term visits and New Arrivals
People coming for 6 months or longer have the option to rent a house or an apartment. Finding furnished apartments is difficult, so it is wise to start looking early, particularly if you are planning to arrive near the start of session (March or August) when you would have to compete with students. We recommend that you book into temporary accommodation when you first arrive, and then investigate longer term housing options. To get an idea of local prices and options, visit the Housing Office.

Dining

On campus there are a number of food outlets serving mostly pre-preared food to go and aimed mostly at students.

Restaurants abound in the surrounding suburbs of Randwick, Kingsford, and Kensington, and range from Fast Food to fine dining establishments. Inexpensive choices include Thai, Indonesian, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, Indian and Modern Australian cuisine (often a fusion of many of the above with an emphasis on fresh, quality, local produce). Typically, restaurants are BYO - Bring Your Own - which means that you can take you own wine or beer. Many restaurants in Kingsford have lunch specials for AU$6 - $8. Dinner will cost anything from AU$10 - $100+ per person depending on the choice of restaurant.
