A Visitors Guide to the School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW

This page contains information for anyone who plans to visit the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New South Wales. Whether you are coming on sabbatical, attending a conference, wanting to have a chat about postgraduate study or just dropping in, we hope that you will find what you need here.

Location

The School of Mathematics and Statistics is located on the main Kensington campus of the University, about 8km south-east of the centre of Sydney.

The campus is bounded by Anzac Parade, High Street, Botany Street and Barker Street . Within the campus, the School of Mathematics and Statistics is housed in the centre wing of the Red Centre Building. It is distributed over 6 floors, with the school office and main administrative offices located on the third floor.

Transport to UNSW Kensington Campus

From the airport
Kingsford-Smith, Sydney's major international airport, provides connections to most Australian and international destinations. The Airport is located about 10km from campus. A taxi to the campus will cost about AU$15 and should take 15-20 minutes. There is also a direct bus service (Route 400 to Bondi Junction), which runs every 30 minutes and costs $2.50. The bus trip takes about 20-30 minutes.

From Central Station
From Central Railway Station, the 891 Express bus and routes 391, 393, and 395 depart from Eddy Ave to the UNSW Kensington campus. The journey takes 10-15 minutes on the Express and 20-25 minutes on the 391, 393 and 395. The trip costs $2.70, or one dip of a brown travel 10 (which can be purchased for around $20 at any newsagency.) Between 7am and 7pm buses operate at approximately 10-minute intervals. After 7pm buses operate every 20-30 minutes. A taxi from Central Railway Station takes 15-20 minutes and costs around $15.

From Bondi Junction
Bus route number 400, travelling between the airport and Bondi Junction, passes along Anzac Parade and stops at the Anzac Gate. The journey takes around 30 minutes and costs $2.50. Between 7am and 7pm these buses operate every 20 minutes. More information about bus services to UNSW is available at the UNSW Transport Page.

Driving
Parking is restricted on campus. We can usually arrange access for visitors who are attending conferences and seminars, if we are given a few days warning - contact your host/organiser. Longer-term visitors usually pay for a parking permit. The most appropriate entrance for visitors to the School of Mathematics and Statistics is Gate 14 (see map) on Barker Street. If you ask directions from the guard at the gate they will direct you to the parking station.

Taxis
Taxis are plentiful throughout the city and eastern suburbs of Sydney and may either be booked by telephone or hailed on the street. If you have 3 or more people travelling, or if there is not a direct bus available, taxis are a convenient and economical way of travelling around the Eastern Suburbs. If you catch a taxi to the university, ask the driver to drop you either at Gate 14 (see map) on Barker Street, or at the east wing of the Red Centre Building, after entering at Gate 14.

Accommodation

As with most large cities, accommodation in Sydney is expensive. Prices given in the links below may not be accurate because accommodation prices fluctuate throughout the year. The options available also vary with the time of year and how far in advance you book, so we recommend that you contact your host for advice. On-campus accommodation is usually in short supply.

Short Term visits
For visits of a few days to a few weeks, a local motel or guesthouse is usually the best option. For a slightly longer stay, renting a holiday apartment near the beach is often more comfortable.

Middle Term visits
Finding accommodation for a stay of several months can be difficult. The best option, if it can be arranged, is to stay in the home of a local staff member who is away. Another possibility is to share an apartment, if you can find a suitable roommate. Visit the Accommodation Office to see lists of places to rent and share.

Long Term visits and New Arrivals
People coming for 6 months or longer have the option to rent a house or an apartment. Finding furnished apartments is difficult, so it is wise to start looking early, particularly if you are planning to arrive near the start of session (March or August) when you would have to compete with students. We recommend that you book into temporary accommodation when you first arrive, and then investigate longer term housing options. To get an idea of local prices and options, visit the Housing Office.

Dining

Restaurants abound in the surrounding suburbs of Randwick, Kingsford, and Kensington, and range from Fast Food to gourmet eateries. Choices include Thai, Indian, Italian, Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, seafood and `modern Australian' cuisine (a mixture of any and all of the above, with local ingredients). Typically, restaurants are BYO, which means that you can take you own wine or beer. AU$15-20 should get you a decent meal.
