Science Watch recently published rankings of Mathematics Departments from all over the world, based on quantity (total number of citations) and quality (impact made by papers). UNSW School of Mathematics and Statistics was ranked number 14 on the quality index, and was the only University outside North America and Europe to make this list. UNSW Mathematics also leads Australian departments on the quantity index, but no Australian University is large enough to compete on a numerical basis with huge international universities.

Professors Ian Sloan and Matt Wand have been named among the most frequently cited mathematical scientists of the past ten years by ISI HighlyCited.com.
