PhD Program

The PhD degree provides a training in research up to the level necessary for initiating and carrying out unsupervised original research. Like the MSc degree, the PhD degree requires the candidate to carry out research on an approved topic, under the supervision of a member of staff. The PhD degree, however, is of a far higher standard, and demands a much greater capacity for independent and original research.

The PhD degree usually requires at least three years of full-time study. Part-time PhD candidature is encouraged but only for candidates who can spend at least 20 hours per week on their research and are able to maintain regular contact with theuniversity.

For information about the research fields available at present in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, together with the members of staff interested in each field, please consult the Research Areas webpage. The formal conditions for the award of the PhD degree are set out in the Calendar and in the Sciences Faculty Handbook. You can consult the UNSW virtual handbook for more information.
