Programs, plans, courses Q: Can you give me advice on my program? A: As MathsStats is not the program authority for any undergraduate program, we can only advise on the MathsStats majors within your program. For complete advice, talk to the Science Student Centre, Commerce Student Centre or Engineering School as appropriate. Q: How do I choose which courses to take? A: Read the course descriptions and see which ones appeal. Details are on the Maths web or can be found in the Virtual Handbook or through myUNSW. Some courses may be compulsory for your program, so familiarise yourself with the details of your program as well. For advice on which courses to take, talk to the coordinator of your program, Director of First Year or Director of Undergraduate Studies. Enrolment, Timetables Q: What should I do if I cannot enrol because of a timetable clash? A: If you have enrolled in a MathsStats course and it is clashing with a course in another School, contact that School. If you have enrolled in a course in another School and want to enrol in a MathsStats course that clashes with it, fill in the clash form on our Current Students page and submit to the appropriate person. Q: What do I do if my MathsStats enrolment problem is not a timetable clash? A: If the problem is with a First Year Course, see the First Year Office; for other courses, see the Director of Undergraduate Studies. It is best if this is done in person but can sometimes be done via phone or email. Q: How do I find out what my timetable will be? A: The timetable will be provided to you through myUNSW as you enrol, or using a "class search" within myUNSW. MathsStats displays only some of its course timetables on its web. Courses Q: Where do I get the course materials for my MathsStats course? A: Course packs are sold through the UNSW bookshop. For some courses, the material is available through My eLearning Vista instead and you will have to download and print it yourself. Q: Who should I ask for help with the material in my MathsStats course? A: All full-time MathsStats staff have consulting hours when they are available to help you if you have problems with the course material. Staff be will happy to help you if they are lecturing or tutoring the course in which the problems lie. For First Year courses, lists of consulting times of relevant staff will be available from about week 3. There is also a Student Support Scheme (run by senior students) which provides tutoring for struggling first year students. For higher year courses, contact your tutor or the lecturer. Part-time and casual staff are usually not available for consulting. Q: When can I access the my eLearning Vista page for my MathsStats course? A: Usually from the first day of week zero, occasionally the week before. Marks etc Q: How do I check my session marks? A: Log on the my eLearning Vista page for any of your MathsStats courses and click the Maths Info link. It will take you to the School's Student Web Portal where you can check your marks. Q: How do I find out my final marks for my MathsStats courses? A: MathsStats releases preliminary marks and grades one week before the official University marks are released. You get these the same way you get the session work marks. For your final marks (including any passes conceded), login to myUNSW. Q: I have applied for special consideration. How do I find out the result of this? A: For session work marks you should apply directly to your tutor or the course authority and they will tell you the result. If it is for the final exam, MathsStats will email your official UNSW account to give you the result on the same day the preliminary results are posted. See the School's additional assessment policy page for more information. Other FAQs will be added as they are needed |
