MATH2841 Statistics SS

MATH2841 is a Mathematics Level II course; it is intended for students who want to take no more than 6 units of credit in Level II Statistics. In particular, MATH2841 does not satisfy the prerequisites for any Level III Statistics course. See the course overview below.

Units of credit: 6

Prerequisites: MATH1021 or Math1031 or MATH1231 or MATH1241 or MATH1251.

Exclusions: MATH1041, MATH2049, MATH2801, MATH2829, MATH2839, MATH2859, MATH2899, MATH2901, BIOS2041, BEES2041, ECON2215.

Cycle of offering: yearly in Semester 2.

Course Overview

The aim in this course is to learn fundamental skills in data analysis for business and research applications. The emphasis is on procedures involving a single variable or for inferring the relationship between two variables. By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Recognise which procedure is appropriate for a given research problem involving one or two variables
  • Understand principles of study design
  • Apply probability theory to practical problems
  • Apply statistical procedures on a computer using SPSS
  • Interpret computer output for a statistical procedure
  • Calculate confidence intervals and conduct hypothesis tests by hand for small datasets
  • Understand the usefulness of Statistics in your professional area
