MATH5525 C*-algebras MATH5525 is a Mathematics Level V course. See the course overview below. Units of credit: 6 Prerequisites: Cycle of offering: Variable Graduate attributes: the course will enhance your research, inquiry and analytical thinking abilities. More information: this recent course handout (pdf) contains information about course objectives, assessment, course materials and the syllabus. (This pdf will usually be updated by the end of the first week of the semester.) The lecture times for this course will be decided at a meeting on Monday morning at 9 am in Week 1 of Session 2 Course Overview C*-algebras are fundamental mathematical objects underlying quantum mechanics and lots of research in modern functional analysis. One can think of C*-algebras as algebras of bounded operators on Hilbert space which are closed in norm and under the adjoint operation. This course aims to introduce students to the basic theory of C*-algebras, including the spectrum, the Gelfand transform, ideals and quotients, positivity, representation theory and the Gelfand-Naimark-Segal construction, and group C*-algbras. |
