Vacation Research Scholarships in Mathematics & Statistics 2008 - 2009

The Faculty of Science, School of Mathematics & Statistics Scholarship

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of New South Wales invites applications from undergraduates wishing to take part in research activities in the School during the summer vacation.

Vacation Research Scholarships are intended for students who are currently enrolled in third year mathematics or statistics and who are interested in further study. Scholarships may also be available for exceptional second year students.

The scholarships will be offered for a period of six weeks during the summer recess. Scholarship holders will receive a weekly allowance of $450 (paid in a lump sum at the end of the Scholarship period) and payment of their transportation costs. The expected cost of full-board accommodation at one of the university colleges is approximately $300 per week.

Vacation scholars will have the opportunity of seeing how research in mathematics is pursued, its application to important problems and the vital part it plays in today's world. Each scholar will work closely with a member of staff and will be tackling a problem of current interest.

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at UNSW is the largest in Australia and attracts many research fellows and visiting mathematicians from all over the world. For many years it has had outstanding success in attracting Australian Research Council grants.

The university campus is situated in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, close to surfing beaches such as Coogee, Bondi and Maroubra and close to shopping centres and entertainment venues.

Further information about the scholarships and research areas may be obtained from Julie Hebblewhite. Further information about the School of Mathematics and Statistics can be obtained from http://www.maths.unsw.edu.au
