Careers In Research UNSW Mathematics is one of the world leaders in mathematical research. Recently we were ranked No 1 in Asia and No 14 in the world for our research achievements. We believe that this research and our training of others in research is our most important function. Mathematical research is an integral part of every scientific and technological endeavour. Mathematical methods are used in research to improve, control, predict and understand system behaviours as well as to extend the frontiers of mathematical knowledge. Employers very much value the skills that you acquire in mathematical research training. These skills include the generic skills of scientific report writing, literature searching, database searching, critical analysis, self motivation and perseverance in addition to the highly specialist knowledge that you will gain. Some of the major employers of mathematicians in Australia are the Defence Science and Technology Organization (DSTO), The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and the NSW Fisheries. A quick look at their web pages will quickly reveal how much they value mathematical research. |
