Entry Requirements for Studying Mathematics (including Statistics and Physical Oceanography) To study Mathematics, Statistics or Physical Oceanography/Meteorology as a major study at UNSW, you must first gain entry into one of the degree programs that allow you to major in Mathematics. In general terms you need to have the equivalent of the New South Wales Higher School Certificate and apply through the appropriate channels. Entry is competitive and the School of Mathematics and Statistics is not able to predict if you will be accepted or not. Information on last year's entry cutoffs for local HECS students in terms of the required University Admissions Index (UAI) are on the Programs and Courses Overview page. These may alter from year to year. All students majoring in Mathematics must take at least the course MATH1131 Mathematics 1A, which has an assumed knowledge of NSW HSC Mathematics Extension 1 at Band E4. If you do not have this level of assumed knowledge, then you should seriously re-think your wish to study Mathematics and seek advice from the Mathematics First Year Office (phone: (02) 9385 7011, email: firstyear@maths.unsw.edu.au). See the Assumed Knowledge page for more information of the required level of Mathematics. Also see the guide to choosing First Year courses. See the Applications and Fees page for links to the information on how to apply and what it will cost. |
