Abstract: 

The topological degree of a continuous function is a generalisation of the winding number and, among other things, it facilitates analytic proofs of classical results in topology such as the Jordan Separation Theorem and invariance of domain. In this talk I will construct the degree and illustrate its use in a couple of applications.
